What is NHS Choices?

NHS Choices (http://www.nhs.uk/) is the national public website for the NHS, having joined forces with NHS Direct in November 2008. It features information on over 750 conditions and treatments; healthy lifestyle advice and has over 30 directories of services from GPs to gyms.

What is the NHS Choices training site for?

The site offers professionals free training to use the NHS Choices website, either in face-to-face workshops; or online, by simply completing a set of online video tutorials. If you have training or management responsibilities, you can get a set of training materials to run your own training sessions.

Why train to use a website?

The training aims to give people who work with the public the confidence to use the website as a resource to give advice about NHS services or information about conditions, treatments or living a better lifestyle. The training familiarises trainees with all the features of the site, and covers the situations in which it can be used.

Can anyone register for a face-to-face workshop?

The workshops are to ‘train the trainer’, and are particularly aimed at people who have training or management responsibilities, who can learn how to run workshops in their own organisations. The workshops are open to all and so far have been attended by professionals from a range of sectors, including: health and social care, libraries, HR and occupational health, local authorities, charities, voluntary organisations, prisons, job centres, education and citizen’s advice.

What if there are no workshops listed in my area?

If there are no events listed in your area and you are interested in hosting a workshop, please contact us for assistance. We require hosts to provide a computer suite to hold the workshops in and we will provide the trainer.

Are the workshops free?

Yes, the workshops are free to attend.

Do I have to register to access the services on NHS Choices Training?

Yes, it just takes a couple of minutes. You will be asked to provide an email address and a password. An email will be sent to your registered email address which must be activated before you can log on.

How does the online learning work?

Once you have registered and logged on, from the main menu, click the ‘online video tutorials’ link. You’ll be offered 15 video tutorials to view to cover all the features on NHS Choices. The tutorials are between 4 and 11 minutes long. You can watch them whenever it is convenient, all at once or over several days.

I want to find out about training to work in the NHS
